Tourism is of great importance to Madagascar's economy because it generates foreign currency necessary for economic growth. It is thanks to the diversification of the tourist offer created through national and international investments in all regions that Madagascar will surpass the milestone of 500,000 foreign tourists. The high cost of airfare to Malagasy destinations is one of the major obstacles. To address this, President Rajoalina announced the opening of Malagasy skies by calling on international companies to collaborate with the government. Madagascar is a country with exceptional national and tourist potential. Its heritage is exceptional, with 5,000 kilometers of maritime coastline, natural biodiversity, and endemic fauna and flora. The fourth-largest island in the world, Madagascar is home to numerous species found nowhere else on the planet, including 30 species of lemurs, a major tourist attraction. Madagascar is also a key port of call for cruise lines.

Madagascar has prepared a Post-COVID Tourism Recovery Plan: inauguration of the new terminal in Ivato, investment of 220 million euros, transformation of 6 regional airports into international airports, reopening of the island of Nosy Be to tourists and development of tourist offers for Malagasy people. In 2019, more than 375,000 tourists visited Madagascar, spending nearly 900 million dollars. Tourism represents more than 5% of the country's GDP and the border closures put more than 600,000 local tourism-related jobs at risk. Also, 15 million dollars have been allocated to the sector. If the pandemic stops, the relaunch of tourism in Madagascar in the summer of 2021 will be a new beginning.
